After graduating, Salma completed her training at JGS under her mentor, Michael Searle, who was senior partner at the time. It was from him she gained invaluable insights into the spirit as well as into the meaning of the law. She left after having served her apprenticeship here and returned with wider experiences and added knowledge, happy to bring something back to JGS.
Salma describes herself as a team player as well as a mad individualist and she has used both aspects of her personality to enrich the mix at JGS. A born teacher, Salma runs a training team in which all the young lawyers actively participate and gleefully challenge her older, sometimes conservative, views from their diverse perspectives.
Salma is the single mother of a beautiful daughter who is now completing her master’s degree at UCT. They still manage to spend a lot of time with Salma's family, surrounded by love, support and mountains of great food. She has three close friends whom she describes as strong women who keep her intellectually stimulated and emotionally grounded. Best of all are those rare hours when she can curl up on a sofa, reading Michael Ondaatje or listening to jazz.
During her years in practice, she has built up valuable relationships with her clients. She currently serves on the panel of the Legal Practitioners’ Indemnity Insurance Fund, where she is able to use her years of experience to advise on professional negligence claims.
With a strong focus on empowering women, Salma continues to mentor women in law and in business. She also serves on the Boards of the St Francis Hospice and the Gutsche Family Investments Art Gallery.
